The Skaņu Mežs festival takes place in Riga since 2003. It is devoted to adventurous – in other words, experimental or innovative – music with occasional excursions into sound art and audiovisual performances. Skaņu Mežs focuses both on the heritage of 20th century avant-garde music and more recent developments, therefore its program is often a kaleidoscopic journey through various genres, from noise, contemporary music and free improvisation to rhythmic music, hip-hop and avant-pop. In his review of Skaņu Mežs’2016, Tristan Bath of The Quietus called the festival „excellently curated”, while German media Electronic Beats listed Skaņu Mežs as one of the most important fall festivals in Europe.
In 2017, Skaņu Mežs celebrates its 15th anniversary. While the full program is yet to be announced, it can be revealed that the participants include avant-garde jazz icon Roscoe Mitchell, experimental hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces, rhythmic music deconstructionists Amnesia Scanner and British composer James Dillon.
