Latvian jazz-funk band Very Cool People have teamed up with charismatic singer Ralfs Eilands
to release a new version of “Shake Before Use”, a song originally written by legendary Latvian
musician Arnis Mednis. The single, released in celebration of Mednis’ 65th birthday on October
18, brings a fresh and energetic sound to his musical legacy, combining the band’s signature jazz-
funk grooves with Eilands’ powerful vocals.
The new interpretation of “Shake Before Use” reflects Very Cool People’s passion for
rediscovering and reimagining Latvian music. Arnis Mednis is a prominent figure in Latvian
popular music, particularly known for his work with the band ODIS, which helped shape Latvia’s
funk and soul scene during the 1980s and 1990s. Through their contemporary arrangement, Very
Cool People and Ralfs Eilands pay tribute to this important chapter of Latvian musical history
while introducing Mednis’ music to a new generation of listeners.
Formed in Riga in 2007, Very Cool People have established themselves as one of Latvia’s most
exciting live acts. Known for their explosive stage energy, powerful horn section, and inventive
musical arrangements, the band blends jazz, funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, and electronic influences
into a distinctive, groove-driven sound. Over the years, they have released ten albums and
performed internationally, including concerts in Germany, Spain, Romania, Estonia, South
Korea, and Lithuania. In 2025, the group received the Latvian GAMMA Music Award for
Jazz/Funk Group of the Year.
The release follows an active year for Very Cool People, including two performances at Berlin’s
legendary B-Flat Jazz Club and recent concerts in Lithuania, one of which was a sold-out show
at Vilnius’ Jazz Cellar 11. With “Shake Before Use”, the band continues its exploration of
Latvia’s rich musical heritage, bringing together different generations of musicians and proving
that great music knows no generational boundaries.
